Bio
I am from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but moved to the Washington, DC area when I was 13, and that transition frames the way I approach my art practice and research. Moving countries inspired me to pursue studies in anthropology and symbolic structures. Losing my immediate connection to my native culture and language while adopting new ones placed me in an in-between space that allowed me to get a glimpse of what makes something and someone foreign.
I am interested in the processes of acculturation and enculturation and how they transform systems of meaning-making. My work is an attempt to explore that liminal space. I am particularly drawn to mythic structures and how they shape the languages and symbolic systems used across different cultures. These relationships compel me to experiment with the structure of mythic narratives as a mode of expression through interactive installation and technology-driven performances.
I’ve been lucky to have had the opportunity to show my work at institutions including the Whitney Museum, MCA Chicago, MoCA, BMA, and more than 100 other venues worldwide.
I taught New Media, Sculpture, and Graphic Design courses for over 10 years at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), George Mason University, Stevenson University, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY).
I’ve also had the pleasure of building award-winning art communities in Baltimore such as Rooms Fall Apart, Glitter Thighs, and Lighthole Gallery / Art Journal.
